[personal profile] mornelithe_falconsbane posting in [community profile] 21_days
This is the official Dead Vanyel Party discussion post!

Whether it's your first read or your millionth, there's always something worth talking about--and rambling at length about at that. Confide in your fellow Lackey fans--who's your fave? What books do you eat up with a spoon? Does Vanyel end up as a gay Companion after the Mage Storms books? Or is he reborn as the very subtle baby herald "Vanel"? If so, does that make Stef his life-bonded companion "Tylenol", or what? And is Ma'ar REALLY dead? (No!)

Life's little questions, and we all want to talk about them.

Anon and unanon are currently allowed on this post. As of August 9, only anon posting will be allowed, in order to foster an anonny sense of anonymousness, in the vein of everyone's favorite meme ;P. The exception to the anon-only rule is the Introduction Thread, where you can introduce yourself and meet fellow players.

If you're looking for "Research Materials", join the comm and visit this post. (Subtle, right?)

Favorite Valdemar Book: Magic's Pawn
Most hated Valdemar book: I could never get into any of the short stories.
Age of first exposure to Lackey: Around 13 or 14.
Favorite Valdemar protagonist and villain: Vanyel's my favorite protag, and Krebain's my favorite villain. So sad we only got like five pages of him.
Least favorite: I honestly can't say. I never read a lot of the ones most commonly cited as least faves.
OTPs: I multiship like whoah here. Particularly excited by Vanyel getting menaced by a variety of evil mages, I supppose.
Introduction: My best-known pseudonym on [community profile] fail_fandomanon is Vanyel's Campaign Manager; I intended to just write one campaign post for the Woobie-Off and ended up falling head over heels into Woobie hell for a massive nostalgia trip. (Looks like the Vanyel Campaign wiki page isn't quite done yet...) During the campaign, I casually mentioned a hypothetical fic fest over email to Mod Mornelithe. She took the idea and ran with it, and now we're here!

I know there was once some Krebain/Vanyel on ff.n, but it appears to have been taken down. ://// I wrote Leareth/Vanyel once and fuck me but I might have to do more of that sometime

Hi, everyone!

Favorite Valdemar Book: I think I have to say Magic's Price. RIDICULOUS TRAGEDY. <3
Most hated Valdemar book: Foundation. I cannot tell you how much I do not care about Mags.
Age of first exposure to Lackey: Probably 13, IIRC.
Favorite Valdemar protagonist and villain: Protagonists include Vanyel, but also Kerowyn and Tarma and Talia. I don't have favorite Lackey villains. They're all too sexually predatorily evil.
Least favorite: I said Mags above, so I'll add Darian. Yawn. Boring.
Thoughts on Yaoi: I love AUs in this fandom. Make all the love triangles into OT3s, and all the tragic deaths into last-minute rescues! Switch around the time periods! Fix the gaping plot holes! I'm here for this!
OTPs: Vanyel/Stefen. Keren/Ylsa/Sherrill (ideally without killing off Ylsa first). Talia/Dirk/Kris. Tarma&the Star-Eyed. Tarma&Kethry.

+1 to all your thoughts on yaoi! Canon divergence is the way to get a genuine "happy ending" in this canon.

Favorite Valdemar Book: LHM
Most hated Valdemar book: LHM. wait.

Real talk, lovehating the LHM is a fount of unfinished business that causes endless fic. Of the others that I've read, the Mage Storms were the most boring, but it goes without saying that the fanfic anthologies are eyebleeding shitballs. I honestly have a hard time caring about things in HoV that don't pertain to the LHM.
Age of first exposure to Lackey: 16 - late bloomer, but it was next to impossible to get hold of where I lived; I read some import copies of the LHM that my sister had borrowed from a friend. I was out of my mind delirious with flu the whole time I was reading, which may explain a lot. (I love that you asked this question, btw. It is clearly relevant).
Favorite Valdemar protagonist and villain: Van, duh. Mornelithe Falconsbane makes me so angry.
Least favorite: On the protag side, not a fan of Lavan. Villains, I'm mostly okay with so long as they're memorable.
Thoughts On Yaoi: you know, I just typed a bunch of stuff but when I got to 'OOC Lendel fans were a blight on LHM fandom until 2010' I deleted it all.

Van/Stef - my honest-to-god OTP, in any position/AU/mortal status.
Van/everyone... I'll read almost anything in LHM fandom. Even the stuff I don't ship is interesting if it doesn't make me want to claw my eyeballs out. I'm used to reading with a hand half over my eyes.
Firesong/everyone including himself
Elspeth/Darkwind
...Well mostly I'm here for Van/Stef

*belatedly getting around to reading all the intro posts*

"Firesong/everyone including himself" made me cackle out loud. I also feel you on lovehating LHM -- I'm the sort of person who backspaces on any fic tagged "major character death." Yet here I am, crying my way through Magic's Price...

Yeah. There are also a few other things that concern me, including stupid plot holes, biphobia, and Leareth being actually Ma'ar and therefore not dead and therefore the entire LHM being a ball of pointless. :P

Favorite Valdemar Book: By the Sword! Though I can't really imagine writing fic for it. There's just no real need.
Most hated Valdemar book: Which of the Gryphon books was the human/gryphon attempted fucking? Because that one. 100% that one. Lackey's bird fetish is way too weird for me.
Age of first exposure to Lackey: Yooooung. I think they were some of the very first novels I ever picked up, so around 10-12, maybe?
Favorite Valdemar protagonist and villain: Kerowyn, Vanyel, Alberich, Tarma, Kethry, Elspeth, and Talia. Favorite villain is definitely Leareth. Though I loved Duke Trelemain (spelling, lol), but he was very unvillainous.
Least favorite: Die in a fire, Prince Ancar. And take Herald Myste with you.
OTPs: I can be sold on pretty much anything, not going to lie. But Alberich/anyone-but-Myste is right on up there.

Favorite Valdemar Book: LHM and By The Sword
Most hated Valdemar book:It's kind of a toss up between the Owl Series and Foundation. The Owl series is just fucking boring, but Mags is a judgmental ass, sorry not everyone can have as shitty a childhood as you, please get over yourself, thanks bye.
Age of first exposure to Lackey: Fifteen or sixteen, and, lol, I started with the Owl books. Thankfully I was a voracious reader and did not care so much about quality as long as I got to read something NEW.
Favorite Valdemar protagonist and villain: Vanyel and Kerowyn obv. I distinctly remember reading Pawn in the school cafeteria, and getting to the part of Van's inner monologue about not being ready for a physical relationship with a girl, and thinking 'oh good, because that's sinful' looooool. I NEEDED THIS BOOK IN MY LIFE SO HARD and even then it took until my mid twenties to finally admit to myself I'm gay. Kerowyn, though. It just occurred to me one day that she is pretty much everything I could ever want in a female warrior type character in a fantasy novel. Strong, competent, smart, and she actually DEMONSTRATES those qualities instead of the text just saying she is, SHE CHOOSES HER CAREER OVER LOVE, she doesn't live in a sterilized fantasy world that doesn't discriminate against women ever. She is just 100% badass and I love her. Idgaf about any of the villains, when it comes to Valdemar the conflicts I am into are the internal ones.
Least favorite: Mags, who seriously needs to get the fuck over himself. We get it, you were abandoned and basically sold into slavery, and living in Haven is a big adjustment and everything. STOP JUDGING EVERYONE BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T SUFFERED AS MUCH AS YOU. I also really hate Karal. Like, there are sues and there are SUES. I prefer my sues superpowered, beautiful and tortured, thank you very much, not modest and self effacing.

Extremely belated:

Favorite Valdemar Book: TLHM... probably Pawn? Stef is my favorite but Price is kinda sloppy, and Promise is fairly solid but the plot kinda sags around knowing that Vanyel just came back from doing the stuff of legends and this book for some reason is set during his brief vacation home. Pawn is fairly solid beyond having a random villain in the last 30 pages lmao and beyond my thoughts on yaoi below. But either way these are the only Valdemar books I've read until they fall to pieces.
Most hated Valdemar book: I'm only just rereading literally these last 2 months so I can't answer this fairly yet, but I remember not being able to get through the Gryphon books when I was younger, and finding the...events... of the Oath series kind of egregious.
Age of first exposure to Lackey: 12! My grade 8 teacher had the Arrows series in her portable and let me borrow them and I was hooked.
Favorite Valdemar protagonist and villain: STEFEN ok he's a POV character he counts. (Vanyel, yes). I... don't really have a fave villain, they're all kind of written the same way most of the time and a friend couldn't resist spoiling me on the fact that a good 90% of them ARE the same guy.
Least favorite: Skif... gets so Nice Guy in Winds... I want to love you, Skif, but your writing there makes that so hard.
Thoughts on Yaoi: Okay but my one quibble with Valdemar as a setting is that I feel like sometimes it fails to take into account the impact that it would have if your king and the majority of your ruling class and important movers and shakers were mind-readers, empaths, etc. I mean it has rules around them, which is great, but I wonder if Valdemar in general wouldn't be just a bit different than it's written? Not more Noble and Pure, it's got that, but in general for example in TLHM the whole plot literally hinged on "We can't let anyone find out Vanyel's gay because we literally have no legal resource to prevent him from getting abused over it" and I understand this is 500 years before the main timeline in a fantasy-medieval society but regardless it's difficult for me to believe that within the context of how this society is formed around gifts, the best solution would be for one of the most powerful adults in the capital to earnestly tell an emotionally-abused sixteen-year-old to hide who he is, how he feels, and who he loves in public for two years while he gets steadily more hated by everyone around him including those in charge of his education and future. Like I feel like something else would logically exist there. [Seinfeld voice] Also what is the deal with Nevis being the only bi representation in a queerpositive story?

Welcome! And agreed -- it seems like the Heralds are always completely unable to control the nobles at court. And you would think they'd make a more concerted effort to educate the populace about what Heralds are, what they do, that the Companions aren't horses...
